Fall Seems To Make Everyone Crazy

Fall Is A Time Of Colors

Fall is a time of colors. Trees that used to be green are now turning orange, red, and yellow.  The grass gets covered with brown, crunchy, leaves.  Fall is also a time of changing temperature.  It isn’t hot like in the summer, but it isn’t quite cold yet.  The weather is cold in the mornings and evenings that you want to wear a coat, but at midday it is warm enough to take it off.  This is also a time of harvest.  All of the crops that were planted in the spring and summer are now ready to collect and store for winter.  Since the pumpkins are ripe, everybody gets crazy with pumpkin spice and potpourri.  Overall the fall is really just a crazy time of the year.

The Fall Colors Make Everyone Crazy!

Once the leaves start to change colors, they don’t stay around for long.  Unlike summer activities, where you have several months of similar weather, the fall colors are gone in just a few of weeks.  Moms are creatures of peer pressure.  If one mom posts a picture of her kids sitting on bales of hay, then every mom has to get a fall picture of their kids.  My wife told me recently that we needed to go to a pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins.  When we got there, for some reason, we didn’t spend time picking pumpkins.  All we did was take pictures of our kids climbing on hay and playing in dried corn.  The funniest part for me, is that we even payed money to get in to the farm, and didn’t complete the stated goal.  If that isn’t crazy, then I don’t know what is.

Cold In The Morning And Warm In The AfternoonThe Wasatch Front Mountains In The Fall

If you look up at the mountains in this picture, you can see the snow starting to build up.  It is normal for the temperature to go down with the sun on any day of the year.  In the winter, even though the temperature changes, it is always cold enough for a coat.  The summer is always hot enough that you don’t want a jacket.  In the fall the temperature is changing in and out of your comfort zone.  When I walk my daughter to school in the morning, it is cold enough to wear a coat, hat, and gloves.  According to my daughter, it is cold enough for two coats.  By the afternoon, when it is time to come home, the sun is shining, and your two coats are too much.  You feel crazy carrying a coat when it is so nice and comfortable outside.

Get Your Pumpkins While They’re Fresh!

Modern refrigeration and transportation has made it so that we are used to having many things all year round.  Even if it is too cold where you live to grow tomatoes, there is somewhere they can grow and you can have fresh tomatoes all year round.  Things like pumpkins are a bit of an exception to that rule, though.  Pumpkins have a long growing season, and they start to ripen as the weather gets cold.  Not that you can’t preserve pumpkin, but it won’t be fresh.  All of the work that you have done in the spring and summer in your vegetable garden will go to waste if you don’t get harvest in the fall.  And ultimately if you don’t do it in time, your veggies will just rot.

Not Pictures Again!

Taking a picture of your kids sitting on cans of pumpkin pie filling is just not the same as a pumpkin with a baby in it.  Sometimes I think we all have too much time on our hands.  Historically you would have spent most of the year makings sure you didn’t starve in the winter.  Now, just a few farmers can make enough chicken nuggets and corn to feed the children of the world.  As a result there are farmers that make a business out of decorative produce.  Corn is dried to hang on the wall or mazes are cut in the field to get lost in.  Pumpkins are carved into Jack-o-lanterns or used to crush cars instead of eat.  And While bales of hay might still get used to feed animals, demand goes way up, just to put them on your porch.  Isn’t it crazy that we are playing with our food instead of eating it?!

Nothing Is Crazier Than Pumpkin Spice

People are creatures of habit.  When it rains, some people really like to curl up with a book and hot cocoa.  It really comes down to how our brains are wired.  Immanuel Kant spent over a thousand pages explaining our need for causality. For a lot of people, when the weather gets cold and the pumpkin harvest is in, everything should taste like pumpkin spice.  Have you ever stopped to think about what is in pumpkin spice?  According to this recipe, pumpkin spice contains 5 ingredients.  These are cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and no pumpkin.  In the fall people go crazy for pumpkin spice everything, and there is no pumpkin in it.  That is just crazy!
